Colorado Hummingbird Gallery

I didn’t have any memories of hummingbirds until I moved to Colorado. My first encounter with one baffled me and was not identified until many years later. I was getting ready to begin hiking in the Rawah Wilderness of northern Colorado when I was startled by some giant, insect-like thing that appeared from nowhere buzzing right next to me. Before I could collect my senses it was gone. It wasn’t until I moved into the mountains that I experienced the same thing and finally identified the amazing hummingbird.

All of these photos were taken by either me or my wife. All were taken around my house with the exception of one from Western Colorado years ago. Feel free to click on each photo and see the larger image. You’ll be surprised by the detail.

Rufous Hummingbird. This wonderful little orange guy is illusive and hard to photograph. They only show up for a short time during the summer. They are very territorial and guard the feeders like little tyrants.
